We became friends after meeting through our daughters in our local London park. Since then our common interest in art, nature and creativity has developed to produce this Nature Journal. This has given us the opportunity to hold events and workshops in exciting and beautiful places such as The V&A, Chelsea Physic Garden, The South London Botanical Institute, Dulwich Picture Gallery, The Arboretum in Bergen and on the volcanic island of Nisyros, Greece.
Artists' Biographies
Marianne Wie
Marianne grew up in Norway, skiing and walking in the mountains. She has always been a keen maker and started sewing and knitting from an early age. She went on to study sculpture at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London and later moved back to Norway to do her Masters in Photography at Bergen Academy of the Arts.
Marianne has created numerous self-portraits including the seasonal portraits that open each chapter of this book. The Goat Warrior of summer and The Apple Warrior of autumn were built as life size sculptures and combine her photography and sculpture practice. Zoë Burt
From a young age, Zoë has been a botanical explorer and sketcher with a love for art, textiles and fashion. After studying at Central St Martins, she worked as a fashion and print designer for several years.
An interest in cyanotype led to the project called Lightbodies, a series of life-size poolside portraits of Lido swimmers. Zoë was a driving force behind the Seeds of Fashion project involving 500 people in making a collaborative linen garment which was spun and knitted from flax seeds sown in London. Her fascination with colour from plants encouraged her to study natural dyes. As well as being an artist and designer, Zoë holds workshops at various ”design meets horticulture” venues including The South London Botanical Institute, Kew Gardens, The Chelsea Physic Garden and The Royal Horticultural Society.
